I'm sitting in a Starbucks in North Las Vegas waiting to do a presentation this evening on the B-29 and something reminded me of Harvey. Low and behold today is the 10 year anniversary of his death.

July 11, 1998 I did a quick search to confirm and yes, today was the day. For those of you who were involved in diving along the East Coast you would know Harvey. He was the wacky guy who loved to catch lobsters, would dress up in a captains uniform and go to dive shows and was one of the original dive store owners. Harvey lived for two things -- Lobsters and Women (in that order)

Here is my first memory of Harvey ...........

------------------
It was 1963, I was four years old, my father had just gotten his first car,
we took a drive to Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn; down Nostrand Avenue to Emmons and we made a right, we pulled up by the fishing boats and parked. My dad took me to see the days' catch. We had a hot-dog at Ross McGuinnes. Little did I know he had a plan. Step by step, we made out way the few blocks to Ocean Avenue. There was a little store there with surfboards, and skis, and tennis rackets........... and scuba! Dad took me to get my first "real" mask.

I remember this little man, smaller than my father, it was a Saturday, and the
store was busy, but he took the time to fit me with this black rubber mask
with the metal "pro" rim, and a snorkel without Ping-Pong balls. 45 years
later I remember him saying "Take it home, try it out in the bathtub, if it
leaks bring it back; if not pay me for it next week."

That was my first introduction to Harvey. He placed the window of the world
on my face...

Harvey was the true backbone of the sport of scuba diving. People all over the
world know Aqua Crazy Harvey, he's discovered wrecks, and probably made some
too, he traveled the world and dinned with ships' captains of the world famous
liners, he ran with the bulls in Spain, and had chased his share of women
too..... He told me once not too many years before he died "I have been all over the world, seen more shipwrecks than one could fit in a lifetime, but my favorite
wreck of them all is the Oregon."

Harvey was a bit crazy, a bit shy, a bit affraid, and a big bit adventurous. He probably introduced more to diving in NY than he was ever able to count. And, we are all so very grateful

10 years later he is still dearly missed.

Rest well.

Harvey was definetely one of a kind. My wife and I often talk about him. One time she went up to his store to get a christmas present for me and came back with flowers and a box of chocolates from Harvey, I don't beleive we'll see anything like him again. I still proudly wear my "Harvey's Dive Team" baseball cap.
